Each year the Gauntlet Trust gives more than £250,000 in support of Materials Science education and research. Support is funded through our Materials Science Partnership which comprises seven interlocking schemes: our own Materials Science Scheme and six jointly funded schemes with AWE, Materials Processing Institute, Morgan Advanced Materials, Rolls-Royce, Tata Steel and TWI The Welding Institute. These leading companies all share our commitment to encouraging young people to pursue careers in Materials Science.
The following grant programmes are open to eligible applicants for as long as funds are available in each financial year ending 31st March:
- Travel Grants for Research Students
- Industrial Placement Grants for Undergraduate Students
- Hardship Grants for Research Students (only awarded in exceptional circumstances)
In addition the Armourers & Brasiers' Company awards an annual Armourers & Brasiers Materials Science Venture Prize of £25,000 to support the commercialisation of promising research in Materials Science. The prize is given as an investment into the startup company. The application period for the 2018 prize runs until 15th March 2018.
Nominations for the Royal Society Armourers & Brasiers Company Prize can be made until 29th January 2018 via the Royal Society’s online nominations system where there is also information about previous winners.
This prize, established in 1985, is awarded biennially to recognise the outstanding contribution of an established researcher to pioneering and innovating Materials Science research with potential for application. It is awarded for a body of work demonstrating excellence in basic research in functional or structural materials where the research is clearly motivated by use of these materials. The prize is given in the form of £2,000 cash prize and a silver commemorative medal.
