Venture Prize

The Armourers and Brasiers' Company, in addition to its donations through the Gauntlet Trust, in support of education and research in Materials Science, also wishes to support the transfer to market of innovative research in Materials Science by providing direct financial support for the commercialisation phase.  This is done through the annual Armourers and Brasiers Materials Science Venture Prize.

Benefits to the UK Materials Science Community -
  • A prestigious award which raises the profile of Materials Science research and development and provides recognition for leading researchers in the field;
  • Prize money of £25,000, to support the commercialisation process.  Researchers often find it difficult to access this kind of funding to facilitate the successful exploitation of new technologies;
  • Encouraging links between the financial and business community and Materials Science researchers, increasing knowledge and awareness and supporting successful collaboration;
  • Enhancing the economic impact of Materials Science in the UK by the creation of new businesses of commercial value, providing challenging and interesting career paths for Materials Scientists and Engineers.

The annual prize of £25,000 is awarded in the form of an investment into the enterprise and is judged on a competitive basis by a committee of commercial, financial and scientific experts.  It is intended to enable the winner to fund a significant commercial advancement of the project.

The Armourers and Brasiers Venture Prize has become a significant factor in enabling the commercialisation of promising materials-based technologies in the UK. Over time, it is hoped that prizewinners will create materials-based enterprises of substantial commercial potential. The prize is therefore intended for projects with a specific commercial objective that should be specified in the application: for example a market study or the creation of a prototype that can be shown to customers, rather than general R&D.

The winner is announced at the annual Armourers and Brasiers' Materials Science Forum in Cambridge, in June each year.
